There are few restaurants in my life where I have genuinely felt insulted after eating there. However, this was without a doubt an exception. The service was appalling. The waiter seemed clueless over what he was doing, having to disappear multiple times to check various pieces of information with the bar. He forgot simple things such as teaspoons, and took far too long to bring such items as extra cream for the scones. The value of the food was frankly, offensive. For what was supposed to be for £22 per person and ordered for two people, came a rather meagre portion, which, despite the beautiful view of the lakes, and considering the rather long preparation time and price, was an unacceptable amount to pay. However, the greatest bugbear I had with the restaurant was their inability to communicate clearly with their customers regarding prices. On the menu it stated '2 afternoon teas for £32.' This would have made each individual one £16, rather than £22. However, when the bill was paid, it was revealed as being full price, making the two teas to a total of £44. It transpired that the offer was not available on Sundays, which was the day that I visited. At the point of ordering, there was no obvious information on the menu, and there was a rushed confusing explanation from my lovely waiter, which led me to believe that the deal was still on, after I enquired about potentially ordering three teas. After complaining to the waiter, nothing but a half-hearted apology was offered. DAYLIGHT ROBBERY!Overall, the service was awful, with little or no communication by the waiters regarding such basic things, and the fiasco over the prices left us with an even bigger bill that was already twice as large as the restaurant deserved. To avoid an irritating, stressful experience, do not eat here!
The people working at this hotel and spa make it so special. We could not fault them in any way. So pleased to help, very responsive to out queries and polite too. Thank you so much. The beds are super comfy and the garden rooms have a fabulous view over Lake Windermere.
Having just eaten here as part of a Valentines Spa Package I feel genuine pity for anyone parting with their cash forfood here. Every single aspect of the restaurant screams of minimising cost which I understand is important but shouldn’t show as much as it does. The service is incredibly rushed. The staff are cold and military like yet disinterested.Starters came 4 minutes after placing our order, they actually beat our drinks to the table. They mask the fact food is prepared way in advance with scorching hot plates but once you start eating this facade becomes clear. The menu is painfully uninspiring if you are on the set menu. These are dishes that shouldn’t be hard to do well. Drinks are abysmally overpriced. £16 for two glasses of white wine of what was a £5 bottle. I will happily pay this when the food is up to standard.Tables are laid out like some sort of function with no music or atmosphere whatsoever. The food is edible but I can’t help feeling that a hotel in such a fantastic location deserves a far higher standard of restaurant. It was visibly clear (mainly due to the lack of music meaning we could hear) that many other customers were disappointed with various aspects of their meal therefore I don’t feel this review is in isolation or unjustified.
A great stay. Amazing breakfast, the hotel has a traditional, cozy feeling to it. We visited with kids, and it was great to see that there was a cut off time in the pool to allow adults some time without kids hanging around. Slept like a log, great views, amazing breakfast, we'll be back.
We ate at the Old England as we did 45 years ago on our honeymoon. A bit disappointed, there was no one on the hotel reception desk but we found our way to the restaurant. The staff were great apart from when we ordered two glasses of bubbly to toast our day and later we ordered two glasses of white wine. There was a delay in the bubbles so we ended up having all 4 glasses at the same time, perhaps inexperience. Most of the food was good but the cheese souffle was awful and like cardboard
After a busy day followed by a three hour drive we arrived after 730pm our booked time for dinner but we were courteously given time to freshen up and rebooked for a little later. The restaurant is large
The lamb and cous cous was lovely although it was a shame the chef forgot the ewes cheese, as did I till it was too late! The custard tart was the only disappointing thing on the menu-clearly not homemade-but
To be fair, I could say the mashed potato was the best I'd ever tasted and complimented the meal perfectly. I was able to order mash instead of the advertised accompaniment, as I preferred mash. Although
The restaurant offers both a gracious continental breakfast and menu options, including Eggs Benedict and Full English. For evening dining, the options are somewhat limited, but the food is excellent.
Our table overlooked the bay crowded with boats and other tourists all left behind for a moment of Earl Grey and a cucumber sandwich. Even if you are not interested in tea tradition this place is worth
