As some previous reviews the restaurant was pleasantly decorated but empty. We were visitors to Rothbury so decided to give it a go. The pricing of the menu was odd, £19 for one course, £26 for two and £29 for three courses. Goats cheese tart was a good starter. For mains we had the lamb.Well, it was enough meat for 2 people with 2 spears of asparagus, fennel, and an orange smear of something, NO potatoes. I had the dry chicken with too many potatoes and over cooked broccoli. I would not recommend this restaurant. A shame as the serving staff were excellent.
As Rothbury residents we have visited the Coquetvale off and on over the last 8 years.Through from the faux Italian to the current day restaurant.Due to a closure of our favourite eatery we headed the CVale more in hope than expectation.Let’s deal with the positives. This is beautiful room with a great view of the Northern hills. It has been tastefully redecorated and is a good room to eat in.The food was good but not great. Between us we had the soup and haggis followed by the lamb and beef. The lamb was a little lonely on the plate but nothing to complain about. The negatives? The owners seem intent to not understand the local market and what diners want.At £26 for two courses the pricing is at the top end and in excess of what people are expecting to spend. For that money it needs to be great. It isn’t.What this means is that the room is empty. We arrived a little early for a table booked for 7pm and had a drink in the bar.Having ordered we were taken to our table in the empty dining room.We asked if we could sit at a table for four in the window but were politely but firmly declined as ‘other diners were coming’. Not so. Only as we were finishing up did a party of four arrive. Apart from that. Not a soul.I really want this place to succeed but would recommend that they address the pricing without going down the standard pasta and pizza route (that job is already well served in the village with someone else seeing the gap in the market). As a piece of customer service it was at best clumsy and with so few customers give the ones you have a little love local word of mouth counts for a lot. We certainly shared our experience with the people that we met in the pub after. With the right offer and pricing and service this is a venue that could be successful. The owners have surveyed guests previously, we have spoken openly and positively to the owner on previous visits. It’s just not there yet. Out of town visitors will support but to thrive this place needs to re-engage with residents who want to eat out 12 months a year.I genuinely want this place to succeed.I hope this is heard.
What a disappointment this was.To have to pay on arrival was obviously because we might leave before the end of our intended visit!Enough said.Staff not to blame but seemed to be untrained and no sign of any level of management.
Myself and my partner stayed here again for one night.... this being our 4th time. Would highly recommend splashing out and staying in the Cheviot or the Ingham rooms as the rooms and there views are amazing!!! Spotless and clean, comfortable and a lovely touch of class as always. We’ve dined in the restaurant on an evening a few times now and have not been disappointed, the food is fresh, tasty and good value. Beautiful English breakfast every morning is fabulous. The hotel bar itself is a perfect relaxing place to unwind, with very comfortable seating and stunning views! It’s set in an idyllic location within walking distance of rothbury village and the river is pretty much right in front of it. Having stayed in rothbury a lot from being a child, I definitely think this place is a one to try, it brings class and luxury into a beautiful little village......... if you want to spoil your loved one this is the place to do it!! Brilliant staff and a lovely place. My only downside is I wish we could of stayed longer!!
Reasonable food but waiter only offered my husband the wine to taste and tried to over charge us for two meals. When the error was pointed out to him he changed the bill but was not sufficiently apologetic.
Smashing Sunday roast and the perfect poached eggs and full Scottish breakfast!!! Everything was fresh and well cooked.
I had a smoked salmon starter and my wife had garlic bread with cheese, both good. For mains, my wife had tempura salmon and monkfish with skinny fries and tartare sauce and horseradish mayo, which
We both had potato skins for starters which were presented really well and tasted very nice followed by a main course of pork belly with black pudding mash and vegetables. The vegetables were slightly
I ordered the smoked salmon for starters and was excellent and then followed with the pork dinner. Presentation of food was extremely professional and the staff were amazing. Would return for another
Not what you want from poached eggs! Otherwise a lovely hotel though.
My wife had, Pea soup, followed by Gnocchi followed by Chocolate fudge cake. The service was perfectly pleasant without intrusion. This has to have been one of the best meals I have had in Rothbury. Compliments
We shared some potato skins which were tasty. Service excellent.
We had visited the restaurant some months ago for Sunday lunch which is a charming room full of character but decided to make the most of the Indian Summer and eat outside .Shortly afterwards Emily served
No potato skins arrived but bruschetta came instead. We were offered for it to be changed but my husband said it was OK. It was nice but something on it was very (spicy) hot. This was not mentioned in
For dessert I had 'chocolate torte with white chocolate shavings and double cream' which arrived minus shavings and cream. I pointed this out and did get both added but why were they not there in the
smoked salmon? Pleasant enough though some oil and balsamic could of gone down well with perhaps pickled mushroom, and sun dried toms. For mains it was their "famous" steak and arrabiata. The steak
Although, we wanted to pay specific tribute to the chocolate torte which was INCREDIBLE!!! Also, we went at Happy Hour when all pizza and pasta was £5 so we got great value for money. We had a 3 course
For deserts we enjoyed chocolate, cheesecake and cheese and biscuits - though again I might say that the few slices of celery and four biscuits weren't enough to do justice to the cheeses that were provided
